SEQOHS Standards Updated November 2023

The latest SEQOHS standards and evidence guide went live on 1st November 2023 following stakeholder consultation.

The new standards have an emphasis on outputs and outcomes. This enables accredited providers to move from showing not only that they are “doing things right” – i.e. processes are robust – to show they are also “doing the right things”, by which we mean understanding, anticipating and delivering what each client organisation needs. Providers can now demonstrate the breadth of value they bring to commissioners/purchasers of services, to their employees, and to themselves through benchmarking.

The work we have done with the Health and Safety Executive on the evidence guide enables providers to more clearly demonstrate how they meet their legal obligations in Health and Safety legislation, as well as greater clarity on how they show they meet data protection requirements, and the disability and other provisions of the Equality Act 2010.

Overall, SEQOHS 2023 enables providers to demonstrate how they meet standards through what they do day to day – delivering value to health and work.

Adherence to the SEQOHS standards is required to become an accredited provider. The standards are categorised into six domains:

  1. Governance and Finance
  2. Resources and Processes
  3. Output and Outcomes
  4. Information and Communication
  5. Quality Assurance and Improvement
  6. NHS

The latest standards can be found here.

OH Staffing – Weekly Blog

Recruitment News – Feb 2020

More than a dozen recruitment companies have signed a letter to Sajid Javid outlining their concerns about what will happen if the IR35 reforms are extended to the private sector as planned on 6 April 2020.

As things stand, from April, medium to large private-sector organisations will assume responsibility for determining whether the contractors they engage with should be taxed in the same way as salaried workers (inside IR35) or off-payroll staff (outside IR35).

Currently, it is down to contractors to make these determinations for themselves.

Although the new rules do not come into play for several months, there have already been numerous reports of large private-sector organisations including Lloyds Bank, GlaxoSmithKline and IBM eradicating limited company contractors from their workforce to relieve themselves of having to carry out IR35 status assessments.

The letter warns: “Major businesses, including most of the banking sector, have already announced they will no longer engage contractors due to a lack of confidence in the legislation. That will just damage growth and productivity.”

OH and Wellbeing News

The first Monday of February is National Sickie Day. The day when employees are most likely to call in sick.

Numerous reasons have been given, such as it being the first payday following Christmas, the end of dry January… and January is a month when a large number of workers apply for new jobs, people may be taking this day off to attend an interview.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that office sick days over the past few years have been declining.

Last year, there were an estimated 350,000 people absent from work due to illness on the first Monday of February in 2019.

Top reasons for employees pulling a sickie include:-

Poor mental health day

Being hungover and not being bothered (I wouldn’t advise using this one if you want a future in the company!)

However, the main excuses were food poisoning, vomiting and flu (Classic)

Recruitment News – Jan 2020

The Government on the 7/1/20 has officially launched its review in to IR35, as promised by Sajid Javid, Chancellor of the Exchequer in November 2019.

According to the Government “the review will determine if any further steps can be taken to ensure the smooth and successful implementation of the reforms, which are due to come in to force in April 2020.”

The review will be concluded by mid-February, which will hold a series of roundtables with contractor groups and medium and large-sized businesses. The Government will also evaluate its Check employment status for tax (CEST) tool.

A separate review will also be launched in conjuncture with the IR35, which is to explore how it can better support the self-employed.

OH and Wellbeing News

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has held the first meeting of its steering group looking at the future shape of Part 3 of the register, the current home in terms of registration for many occupational health nurses.

The meeting saw occupational health represented by the Faculty of Occupational Health Nursing (FOHN) and the National School of Occupational Health (NSOH)

Within OH, there have long been concerns as to whether NMC-validated Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) occupational health courses remain fit for purpose and whether the NMC even fully understands the nature and complexities of OH practice.

But the meeting in November put that latter concern at least to rest, emphasised Fiona King, FOHN deputy chief operating officer.

“It was very positive. We can be quite negative within OH sometimes about the NMC. But, actually, I felt they were very much listening. Occupational health got equal airtime to everyone else and there was an understanding that there were differences, and the unique positioning that occupational health has. It was very much, ‘how do we make this work going forward?” she told Occupational Health & Wellbeing.

The review process is expected to run for a further 18 months at least and the steering group is being chaired by former deputy chief nursing officer for England Dr David Foster.

Recruitment News – Oct 2019

The number of people employed in the UK has unexpectedly dropped with official statistics showing the biggest fall in four years as Brexit uncertainty finally weighed on one of the more resilient areas of the British economy.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, the number of people in employment dropped by 56,000 in the three months to August

The drop pushed the employment rate 0.2 percentage points down from its all-time high of 76.1 per cent in the three months to July.

Part-time employment is more volatile and possibly the first part of the jobs market to reflect a change.

IR35 into the private sector

Following my Blog last week IR35 is still hot news in the recruitment industry

I have already written about Barclays Bank and Lloyds Banking Group putting an end to contractors, with similar issues arising when the same rules were applied to the public sector, the question is being asked…

“HMRC believes legitimate Personal Service Company (PSC) engagements are relatively rare?”

This is bad news for the many contractors whose work falls outside of the IR35 rules.

Moves towards a blanket ban are happening now because contracts in some sectors, such as IT, are often three to six months in duration, so the April 2020 introduction of the new rules is now near enough to trigger action.

OH and Wellbeing News

Bupa and Optima Health have partnered to increase occupational health access

Health insurance and healthcare provider Bupa has partnered with The UK’s largest OH provider Optima Health in a move designed to expand access to occupational health services for employers.

The tie-up means that from early 2020 Bupa’s 900 corporate customers will be able to access a network of more than 500 occupational health practitioners across more than 120 sites, giving them increased levels of OH support and more flexibility.

The move comes against an increased focus on, and discussion around, how to widen access to occupational health and workplace health support.

IR35 into the private sector

Following my Blog last week where I reported that Barclays Bank has announced it will stop using off-payroll contractors through limited companies

Lloyds Banking Group has followed suit and decided to either scrap contractors or force them in to umbrella companies

The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) is warning other businesses to not follow suite and said this move “could not only harm the self-employed, but also long-term flexibility and productivity.”
